Meet Byron Jarrett Sr

Byron Jarrett Sr. CEO, Innovative Counseling and Consulting Inc.

Byron Jarrett Sr. was born and raised in the heart of South-Central Los Angeles and educated through the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). As a student-athlete at Cleveland High School in Reseda, California, Byron excelled both academically and athletically, attracting the attention of college coaches and scouts across the country.

In 1991, a pivotal internship at Camp Vernon Kilpatrick—where he tutored many of the original athletes who inspired the Gridiron Gang—sparked his passion for mentorship. That same year, he transferred to Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa on a football scholarship. There, he continued his commitment to youth development by launching a tutoring and reading program at Mt. Pleasant High School as part of a second internship.

Byron graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1994 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and soon relocated to Des Moines, Iowa. From the moment he arrived, he dedicated himself to serving youth and families throughout Central Iowa.

With more than 35 years of mentorship experience, Byron has coached boys’ and girls’ sports at nearly every level—high school, middle school, competitive travel teams, recreational leagues, and even semi-professional teams. In addition to coaching, Byron has founded, led, and operated several highly successful human and social service agencies, building a long-standing legacy of impact and innovation.

His commitment to mentorship and excellence is most evident in his own children, all of whom are proud graduates of Des Moines Public Schools and key contributors to the city’s academic and athletic success—especially at Hoover High School, where the Jarrett family is the most decorated in the school’s athletic department history:
